Pregnant mares staying
at MDF for year-round care are kept in pastures in small groups
according to gestation periods or some mares make
friends and they are kept together. Mares are
monitored and can be moved if domination occurs. We have a 100
stall mare motel where mares are brought within one month of
foaling. As their foaling day approaches they are moved to
foaling paddocks or foaling barn, where they can be monitored 24
hours a day. Once the mare foals, mare and foal are moved to
pens which are specifically built for them.
Open mares are also kept in large pastures and brought into the
mare motel for light therapy treatment beginning in December to
bring them into season for an early breeding date.
The breeding barn is complete with laboratory for collection,
embryo transfers and evaluation of semen. Breeding and
reproduction is overseen by ESMS Veterinary Service.
